Dutch Oven Charcoal Hints

Keep your charcoal dry

  • A 5 gallon bucket with a bucket boss lid/seat and organizer works great.

Buy top quality charcoal – It burns hotter and lasts longer

  • Avoid cheap generic brands
  • Do not use “Match light” charcoal – burns out fast

Get a fairly tight fitting fire pan

  • Keep the fire pan up off of the ground as that will sap the heat out

Have a windshield available – HD Foil in the WIDE roll works well
ALWAYS COUNT YOUR COALS!!

  • Sloppy methods = sloppy results
  • For a regular depth pot:
    • 2x size = 350degree oven on a nice (warm and calm) day
    • 2 coals adjustment = 25 degree adjustment
    • Add more for a deep pot
    • Add more for wind and cold (This is where the art comes in!)
    • Bias the coals to the top if you have a good fire pan setup
  • Example:
    • 12 regular = 24 coals for 350 oven. 15 on top and 9 under with a good fire pan setup

ALWAYS PUT YOUR BOTTOM COALS IN A RING!

  • None in the middle
  • Do it like this:

Fire safety is VITAL

  • Coals buried in ash can still light after 2-3 days
  • Have an ash disposal system
  • Completely liquefy ash with water prior to disposal
