Pre-work for first session

Find a board game, a non-board game, and an active game you really enjoy. Come to the first session ready to talk for a minute on each of them.

First Session (April 18th, 7:30-9:00)

5 minutes Introduction: Discuss what is a game and why people play them
10 minutes Video on what makes a board game fun
5 minutes Goals of sessions/Compare & Contrast Games/Give out design notebooks (Mr Ricard)
Break into groups
5 minutes Talk about games they have enjoyed
20 minutes Creating a game
5 minutes Playtest, respond
5 minutes As a large group, discuss homework assignment

Game Design Homework Assignment 1

Second session (April 25th, 7:30-9:00)

20 minutes Guest speaker, Craig Parsons, who has create the game "Who? What? Where?"
5 minutes Discuss game design steps PowerPoint
Break into groups
5 minutes Review homework assignment
Talk about games played that week
20 minutes As a group, do the Game Modification Challenge
10 minutes Discuss potential game ideas with small group
5 minutes As a large group, discuss homework assignment and give out Game design form

Game Night (April 26th, 7:00 - 10:00)

Lots of junk food
Scouts play board games
Scouts play games they designed in session 1 & 2

Third Session (May 2nd, 7:30-9:00)

10 minutes Jimmy Seifert talks about artistic design
5 minutes Mr Ricard: What makes a game have Play Value
Break into groups
30 minutes Work on game

Fourth Session (May 9th, 7:30-9:00) — if needed

10 minutes Mr Ricard talks on intellectual property
Break into groups
30 minutes Final work on games
